- SOFTWARE FRAMEWORKS ASSOCIATION CLOSES ITS DOORS
- MACTECH MAGAZINE PROVIDES FOR FRAMEWORKS READERS
-
-
- SUNNYVALE, Calif. and LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- August 9, 1994 -- Formed
- in August of 1986 as the non-profit MacApp Developer's Association
- (MADA), the Software Frameworks Association announced today that it
- is closing its doors and ceasing to do business. To help soften
- the blow to the Macintosh(R) developer community, Xplain Corporation
- has announced that MacTech(tm) Magazine will pick up where SFA left
- off.
-
- For the eight years of its existence, SFA provided help to developers
- learning and using Object Oriented Programming technology and helped
- to promote small software developers by publishing their tools for
- Apple's MacApp(R) and OOP development community. Apple's focus on
- Bedrock(R) and more recently OpenDoc(tm), has left SFA with a
- dwindling membership. SFA's newsletter to its membership, FrameWorks
- published every other month, and its conference, held each spring,
- were some of the first endeavors dedicated to Object Oriented
- Programming and its tools and techniques. Today, there are many
- conferences and journals dedicated to what is now considered a
- standard tool in the developers toolbox.
-
- "SFA thanks the many outstanding members who have contributed their
- time, effort and code over the years to bring about the use and
- understanding of OOP. Their insight and understanding has served the
- industry well and SFA encourages them to continue to share what they
- have learned with their fellow developers and to help move ahead
- software technologies that create great products." said Carl Nelson,
- SFA Board Member.
-
- The second oldest Macintosh publication -- MacTech Magazine (formerly
- MacTutor(tm)) -- has agreed to help SFA members in SFA's transition.
- "We at MacTech Magazine have always had a lot of respect for MADA and
- SFA -- they served the needs of an important niche for Macintosh
- programmers. We'll be sorry to see them go." said Neil Ticktin,
- Editor-in-Chief/Publisher of MacTech Magazine. "We'll be adding or
- enhancing our regular coverage of OOP so we can pick up where
- FrameWorks is leaving off. We will be asking FrameWorks authors to
- continue to write -- just now for MacTech Magazine. You should expect
- to see the same FrameWorks type articles on a regular basis in
- MacTech." And to make certain that FrameWorks articles are still
- available to the community, MacTech has agreed to include some or all
- of these articles in a future release of the MacTech CD-ROM.
-
- For all SFA members who have issues remaining in their FrameWorks
- subscription, Xplain Corporation will be providing two issues of
- MacTech Magazine for each outstanding issue of FrameWorks. Those SFA
- members who are already a MacTech subscriber will receive an
- extension to their current subscription. The transformation will
- take place starting with the October or November issues of MacTech
- Magazine. FrameWorks subscribers do not need to do anything, it will
- all happen automatically.
-
- Effective September 1st, Xplain Corporation, the publisher of
- MacTech, will invite the products published and distributed by SFA to
- be a part of the MacTech "Mail Order Store". These products include
- AdLib, a replacement for Apple's MacApp ViewEdit; MAScript which
- Apple will be incorporating into the next release of MacApp;
- Savvy, the only scripting addition to MacApp that allows for full
- AppleScript attachability and editability; and the US distribution of
- Mjølner's Beta programming language.
-
- In 1984, MacTech Magazine (formerly MacTutor) gave developers the
- first information about the Macintosh, without regard to Apple's
- "developer status." Many, if not most, veteran Macintosh programmers
- "cut their teeth" on the magazine. Today, the magazine has added a
- number of regular features to help developers sort out the details of
- the industry:
-
- * Powering Up by Apple Engineers and others "in the know"
- * NewsBits for relevant developer news
- * Programmers' Challenge by efficiency enthusiast, Mike Scanlin
- * Inside Information by Apple's premier insider, Chris Espinosa
- * Tips & Tidbits by the readers of MacTech Magazine
- * THINK Top 10 by Symantec's Technical Support Group
- * Getting Started by noted author, Dave Mark
- * Tools of the Trade Product Reviews
- * Feature Articles
- * Conference Reports
- * Mail Order Store and more!
